The Liberal Fire Department was called out to a structure fire at 1:36 a.m. this morning at 409 N. Pershing. Chief Kelly Kirk said although no injuries were sustained, the house suffered significant damage. “It ended up burning the out building completely down and affecting the primary house on the property,” Kirk said. “It also got into a two-story apartment complex to the south. What we found was there was a detached garage that sits behind the house on the property, and the police officers and sheriff’s deputies on the scene reported it to be fully involved. The fire was already extending to the back of the house and then there were some apartments on the property immediately south and they weren’t affected yet, but by the time we got things deployed they did start to get some fire damage along the eaves. Then the fire extended to the exterior and into the attic area of the house on the property.” Kirk added there was a considerable amount of damage to the home and investigators will be on the scene today in order to gather further information. The LFD was back in service at 5:30 this morning, however, Kirk said the fire was declared under control within approximately one hour after the department’s arrival. Courtesy photo/Chris Garrison
