Liberal Athletic Director Scott Hinkle has made his decision on Liberal’s next football coach.
Tonight, the USD No. 480 Board of Education will have their opportunity to officially accept Wade Standley, the current defensive coordinator for the Class 6A Oklahoma champion Tulsa Union Redskins.
“Wade will bring a great work ethic, great vision, and great level of enthusiasm to the Redskin football program,” Hinkle said in a release.
Standley’s Union defense held opponents to an average of 10.8 points per game last season while the Tulsa Union offense averaged 44 points.
Union defeated their arch rival Jenks twice. The first was a 24-17 victory in the second week of the season, and the second was in the state championship game. Union won 34-20.
Standley committed to accepting the Liberal job Sunday evening.
Liberal has had its share of success, winning four state championships in the 1990s under head coach Gary Cornelsen.
Liberal has not been to the state championship since winning it in 1997.
Standley is expected to replace Tom Schroeder who was asked to resign after three seasons at the helm of the Redskin program.
