A world championship may be in the cards for two USD No. 480 schools – West Middle School and Liberal High School – at the next stop in the Odyssey of the Mind competitions in Maryland. West and LHS students waited on tables and delivered orders Thursday at Spencer Browne’s as part of a fundraiser for the trip. The West students also performed a skit for the audience. LHS also recently conducted a fundraiser which consisted of auctioning off 10-inch lime almond cheesecakes. Carmen Sumner, mother of LHS OM student Evan Sumner, coordinated that event, and she reported the auction raised more than $400 of the $7,300 needed for the trip. Elizabeth Irby, mother of West OM student Mitchell Irby, reported $260 was raised from Thursday’s fundraiser at Spencer Browne’s. Sumner said more fundraisers have already taken place, and more are on the schedule before the teams travel to Worlds on May 24. She added combined, all of the fundraisers have raised most of the money needed. L&T photo/Robert Pierce
