Coming into Monday night’s match-up at Rosel Field the A’s, one game back from first place in the league, might have expected to walk over the then 4-5 and out-of-contention Royals. The Royals didn’t live up to expectations and rode an early lead through a couple of late A’s rallies to win 17-11 and spoil the A’s hopes of a first place finish.
Both teams came out in the first inning putting runs on the board with the score knotted at two-a-piece.
The A’s added two more runs in the second to go up 4-2. Struggles finding the strike zone for the A’s and some timely Royals hitting, including a three-run blast over left-center by Chris Boman stole momentum and put the Royals up 8-4 at the close of the inning.
The A’s were held scoreless in the third, and the A’s woes on the mound continued as Royals batters seized opportunities with runners in scoring position to increase their lead to 11-4 heading into the fourth.  The A’s had two cross the plate in the fourth, and the Royals kept up their production to send things into the fifth inning with a comfortable 15-6 lead.
Just one-run shy of the run rule, the A’s bats started to come alive, and they rallied to pull within six, 15-9, but the Royals answered to go up eight, 17-9, with only one inning left to play.
The A’s made things interesting scoring a couple runs, but a base-running error allowed the Royals to get the runner out at third. The out killed the A’s  momentum and ended their last shot at a late rally.
With the win the Royals end their season at 5-5, and the the A’s fell to 6-3,  a game-and-a-half back of the 8-2 White Sox, with only one game remaining.
