DR. IAN F.M. YEATS
Dr. Ian Fergus Mackenzie Yeats, 65 (longtime family physician in Meaford, Ontario, Canada, then Liberal, Kansas, U.S.A.) died suddenly on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in Denver, Colorado. Loving husband of devoted wife Trudy (nee Bodkin) of Liberal, Kansas. Son of James (deceased) and Marjorie Yeats of Dorchester, Ontario, Canada.
Survived by loving daughters Lindsay Tock (Husband Jesse) and Mackenzie Yeats, and sons Tavis Yeats, Todd Mason and Scott Mason, and sisters Sandi Hirota (Husband Seji) and Marilyn Monk (Husband Jim).
Dr. Yeats was the recipient of a series of awards that firstly included his graduation from high school and included the Edwards Shield, based on Rhodes Scholarship principles, named outstanding graduating student and Junior Citizen of the Year (1962, Glenview High School, Galt, Ontario).
Ian graduated with honours from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada in 1968. He was appointed to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Society-an international medical society based on scholastics and leadership qualities, and was a member of the university’s student council and an honour athlete.
Upon graduation, Dr. Yeats received the Roche Scholarship, received the Medical School Honor Award based on scholastic and extracurricular activity, and was presented with the Ivan Hamilton Smith Prize. Ian was also president of his graduating class and became top cadet of the Canadian Armed Forces’ Medical Officers’ Training School.
Dr. Yeats interned at St. Paul’s Hospital (1969, Vancouver, Ontario, Canada).
Following extensive service to the Canadian Armed Forces, Dr. Yeats joined the Ottawa Civic Hospital staff (1975-77) with responsibility for teaching programs for intern and resident physicians. He was Physician in Post Coronary Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at Carlton University, then full time physician in Kitchener (1977).
Ian began his love of family practice in Markdale, Ontario (1979), where he was also Chief of Staff at Markdale General Hospital (1979-1981). He moved his practice to Meaford, Ontario (1981-1995) where he continued his commitment to medicine as president of the medical staff, and medical director at Meaford Nursing Home.
In 1995, Dr. Yeats and his much-needed skills were brought to Liberal, Kansas where he joined the staff at the Southwest Medical Center, and opened a general practice in Hooker, Oklahoma. He became Medical Director for the Liberal Good Samaritan Center, and the Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal, then established his medical practice in Liberal (January 1999-present). Patients revered Dr. Yeats and his unique bedside manner, and staff at his clinic learned quickly how devoted Ian was to those same patients.
Dr. Yeats is noted for the publishing of articles to the national Journal of Family Practice News.
Ian always demonstrated his love of family, and the accomplishments of his children. He loved to travel, loved to enjoy life, and loved the wonderful years of life with Trudy that centered around his love of golf. His last international journey was to his family’s homeland in Ireland and the history of William Butler Yeats during the summer of 2008, along with memorable golf games and the usual laughter and enjoyment that always surrounded Ian.
o A service to recognize the many contributions of Dr. Ian Yeats to the Liberal community has been scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27 at the First Baptist Church in Liberal, Kansas (Pastor Gary Damron presiding). In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made in the name of Dr. Ian Yeats to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society, care of Kitch-Brennerman Funeral Home, 1212 West 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas 67901.
