Just a few short weeks ago, the Cardinals were sitting in fourth place and looking to break a losing streak.
After last night’s 11-1 victory over the Rockies, the Cardinals are now in second place and will receive a bye in the first round of the Cal Ripken League Tournament that begins at 6 p.m. today at Rosel Field.
The Cardinals used Serbando Avila on the mound to limit the Rockies, but the Rockies were able to hold down the Cardinal offense as well through the first four innings.
The Cardinals had a 4-0 lead after the fourth inning, but the Rockies struggled in the fifth and allowed four more runs to score.
For the first time this season, the Rockies were able to force the game to go the distance, demonstrating improved play from a team that struggled with injuries and did not get a win.
The Cardinals added three more in the top of the sixth, and the Rockies avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the sixth and left the bases loaded in the 11-1 loss.
The Rockies will play the A’s in the first round today, and the winner will play the Cardinals Saturday.
In the other first-round game, the Royals will play the Tigers, and the winner will face the No. 1 seed White Sox. The tournament is double elimination.
