Liberal avoided a sweep in Derby by pulling out a 5-3  win in the final game of a three-game series. The win put the Bee Jays back within a half a game of the league lead, trailing Hays and Haysville.
Derby struck first on the night scoring three in the first.
Liberal was unable to get a run across until the fifth. Blake Bergeron singled home second baseman Ross Kivett, and in the seventh Kivett scored Reagan Pearson from third with a roller to first to cut the Derby lead to one.
In the eighth Reyn Nagamine knocked in first baseman Bergeron before Liberal loaded the bases for Micah Green who scpred anpther Bee Jay RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field. Liberal never trailed after that.
Jared Moore got the start and after the first inning had a good day on the hill. Moore went six innings, gave up two earned runs with five strikeouts and a walk. Moore got a no decision on the night. Brent Harrison received the win throwing the seventh before Cale Elam came in and threw the eighth and ninth.
Nagamine and Bergeron had strong plate performances both finishing the night with three hits.
Liberal moved to 15-11 in the Jayhawk League in a tight race. Liberal will host the Dodge City A’s Saturday night at Brent Gould Field.
