WILLIAM H. POE
ELKHART – Wilburn H. Poe, 81, died Monday, March 30, 2009, at Odyssey Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born Sept. 7, 1927, to Ernest E. and Ella Hawkins (Poe) in Gunsight, Texas.
He married Dorothy Wood March 12, 1949, in Borger, Texas. She died Oct. 4, 1994.
He graduated from Borger High School.
He served in the Army from 1945 to 1947 during World War II. He was a production superintendent for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company for 37 years until his retirement.
Wilburn was a past commander for VFW Post No. 3162.
He enjoyed playing the steel guitar and watching the Dallas Cowboys.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Slates, Elkhart, and Marsha Green, Pauls Valley, Okla.; two brothers, Delbert Poe, Hempstead, Texas, and Alton Poe and wife, Annetta, Austin, Texas; one sister, Alice Sanders, Fort Worth, Texas; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lorene Stewart, and his stepfather, Roy Lunday.
o Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Elkhart with the Rev. Tim Lapp presiding.
Burial will be at the Elkhart Cemetery with military rites conducted by the VFW Post No. 3162.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.
