The annual alumni scrimmage for the Liberal Redskins saw flashes of greatness and moments of mental lapses.
The Redskins finished as runner-ups in the state championship tournament a year ago after claiming their 10th consecutive Western Athletic Conference title.
But a number of new players were taking the field as varsity starters in the scrimmage, and the first-game experience provided the Redskins the opportunity to get a feel for each other in a simulated game environment.
The alumni took a 3-2 lead in the second half, but the Redskins rallied for a 4-3 advantage.
The highlight of the game came when the alumni had a free kick and the Redskin goalie made a diving save.
The alumni did score two late goals to win the game 5-4, but it is highly unlikely that the Redskins will face any team this season with the collective experience of the alumni squad.
The Redskins showcased some team speed and took advantage of break-away opportunities, something that should benefit the team when the season begins next week.
