The young Liberal Redskins sent a strong message in the season opener against Great Bend Thursday at Redskin Field — we are still the Liberal Redskins.
After graduating a large class last year, there were some doubts about the younger edition of the Redskins. But those doubts were quickly dismissed when the Redskins scored eight goals in the first game of the season against the Great Bend Panthers.
The Class 5A runner ups from a year ago looked like they were ready to make another run to the state tournament in the 8-3 victory, but coach Lori Navarro was not ready to plan the trip just yet.
“We did pretty good,” she said.
But  our midfielders and defense  — we need a lot of work in that area. We broke down any time Great Bend did put on an atteck. We didn’t respond. Offensively we did well. Defensivley, we have a lot of work to do. The new defense and midfield, I wasn’t pleased with that.”
Giving up three goals is a rarity for the Rdskins.
Last year, the Redskisn gave up four goald to Hutchinson and three in the state championship to St. Thomas Aquinas.
Other than that, the Redskis kept every other opponent to two or less.
But scoring eight with a young group of Redskins was an impressive show.
“Offensivley we did some great things,” Navarro said. “We are fortunate to have Isai Gutierrez and Eduardo Moreno up front. They moved the ball around very well, and they assisted each other.”
Moreno scored six of the eight Redskin goals, most of them from a front-on atack after penetrating the Panther defense up the middle.
“We are going to facing tougher teams at Titan Classic, and the defense won’t break down as easily,” Navarro said. “We have to move the ball to the outside. We moved it too much to the middle. That will hurt us against a good defensive team. We have the ability to score, we just need to mix it around.”
