The Seward County Community College/Area Technical School Board of Trustees met Monday for its regular board meeting to hear reports, approve expenditures and accept resignations.
Ed Poley, director of the area technical school, told the board that the Kansas Board of Regents approved a leadership grant to help train and certify instructors.
Business and Industry is busy this month with the NACE Rectifier School this week and the Gas Compressor Institute, April 21-22, said Dale Reed, associate dean of educational services.
He also reported that the Kansas Department of Commerce approved a $90,000 Solutions Fund Grant for the Natural Gas Technology program.
The grant will be used, in part, for the salary of the instructor and to remodel and retrofit the tech school facilities that will house that program.
Dale Doll and Bill McGlothing, English instructors, accepted their award recently from the National Council of Instructional Administrators for curriculum innovation. They presented their paper on “Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide: Changing Campus Culture by Assessing Writing Across the Curriculum.” Cynthia Rapp, dean of instruction, and Dr. Duane Dunn were on hand for the award.
Enrollment for the summer and fall semesters is now under way on campus. Admissions has scheduled Enrollment Days for incoming freshmen beginning in May. New students will have the opportunity to learn more about the campus and campus activities, enroll in college classes and meet future classmates.
Tom Williams, dean of administrative services, reported that the college will continue to see a rescission of funds from the Kansas Legislature.
In other action, the board:
o Accepted the resignation from Lori Geis, vocal music instructor; Jon Noland, director of the library; and Susan Ingland, nursing instructor; o Approved changes to the organizational chart that include title changes; o Approved the proposal from Byron Bird and Associates of Liberal in the amount not to exceed, $29,000 to perform the fiscal 2009 independent audit; o Tabled changes to board policy 516 regarding Uniform Athletic Agents Act; o Approved the deletion of board policy 617 regarding master’s degrees; and o Accepted the sole bid from Thomas Landscape in the amount of
$60,652 to replace broken or uneven concrete on the main campus.
The Custom Car Show and Spring Fiesta are scheduled for Sunday, April 19, for the whole family. The car show will feature more than 100 classic and custom-built cars, trucks and motorcycles, at 2215 N.
Kansas. The Spring Fiesta, at 1801 N. Kansas, will feature carnival games, face painting, coloring contest and hundreds of prizes and food. Participants will have an opportunity to visit with a variety of programs as well.
In conjunction with the Spring Fiesta, the college will host a brunch and musical entertainment from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 19, in the cafeteria. The cost is $6.
Other events include the musical “Nunsensations” at 7:30 p.m., April 17-18; Booster Club Golf Tourney, April 25, at Willow Tree Golf Course; The Ag Banquet, 6 p.m., April 25; Formal Concert, 7:30 p.m., April 30, theater; Athletic Banquet, 6 p.m., May 1, gym; Pops Concert, 7:30 p.m., May 2, theater.
The next board meeting is Monday, May 4, in the board room.
