Despite the advantage of selective enrollment, St. Thomas Aquinas’ streak of eight consecutive state championships in Class 5A soccer has come to an end.

Aquinas was eliminated from the playoffs Tuesday in penalty kicks by Stilwell Blue Valley, a team that Aquinas defeated 4-0 earlier in the season.

The loss ends Aquinas’ streak of eight consecutive state championships and leaves the door wide open for the four remaining teams.

In the past five seasons, Liberal has been the most successful public school in Class 5A.

Liberal has open enrollment and accepts all students which are counted to determine athletic classification. Aquinas individually selects its students on an admissions basis and does not necessarily accept all students who live within a certain proximity of the school like Liberal and most public schools.
