Augustine  Ortiz, 27, killed when pickup slides off gravel road, rolls • Daily Leader staff report

A Turpin, Okla., man died Saturday afternoon in the Oklahoma Panhandle when he was partially ejected from his vehicle after it slid off the road and rolled.

Augustine Jaime Ortiz, 27, was killed in a one-vehicle roll-over around 4:50 p.m. Saturday when the 2002 Chevy pickup he was driving slid off a gravel road 1/2 mile south of U.S. Highway 54 on Road G west of Turpin, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, which assisted with the incident.

The report noted he was heading south on County Road G when the pickup went off the right side and rolled. It added he was partially ejected, which resulted in the fatal injuries.

A lone passenger, Balente Andres Ortiz, 29, was also injured in the accident and taken to Southwest Medical Center in Liberal for treatment.

Neither man was wearing safety restraints, according to the report.

The release did not indicate if rainy weather played a part in the incident, as a steady rain hit the area Saturday morning.
