TURPIN, OKLA. — The Turpin Lady Cardinals used runs of 9-0, 13-0, 10-0, and 10-2 to pick up their first win of the season, 51-27 over the Keyes Lady Pirates.
“I thought we gave good effort,” said Lady Cardinals coach Gary Wallace. “I was happy with our defense and our box outs . On offense we were getting good looks. We’re not making all those shots yet, but we are seeing them and that’s an improvement from the first game.”
After leading 25-15 at the half, Turpin took control of the game at the start of the third. Raegan Alvarez and Payton Robinson both hit their second threes of the game on back-to-back possessions to push the lead to 31-15 just over a minute into the second half.
Keyes was forced to guard the perimeter, and the Lady Cardinals took advantage inside. Natalia Baeza (19 points, 8-17 shooting) scored the Lady Cardinals next ten points in the paint to push the lead to 41-22 heading to the fourth quarter.
“I’ve been stressing with our girls that we have three tall girls inside, and we need to take advantage of that because most teams are not going to have that,” said Wallace. “I thought are guard play was much better tonight. In our first game they kind of buckled under pressure. Our point guard did a good job getting us into our offense, and we were able to get good shots all night.”
In the fourth quarter, Turpin continued to get shots in the paint, and dominate the boards, and pushed the lead to 26.
Keyes did lead 6-3 midway through the first quarter after hitting threes on consecutive possessions. Turpin responded with a 9-0 run, and led 12-8 at the end of the first. The Lady Pirates cut the lead to just one in the first minute of the second quarter. But the Lady Cardinal defense stiffened and held Keyes scoreless for the next five minutes during a 13-0 to take a 25-11 lead with just under three minutes left in the half.
Turpin is now 1-1, and will host Hooker Tuesday, December 6.
