Daily Leader staff report

Of the 52 teams vying for the Class 5A-1A girls soccer title, the Lady Redskins have moved one step closer.

The No. 15 seed in the South central region, Liberal (5-12) knocked off No. 10 Wichita Independent (5-9) 3-1 and will face No. 3 Rose Hill (12-1-2) at 7 p.m. today.

The Lady Redskins advanced with a major offensive turnaround since their last game against Dodge City.

Liberal was able to spend more time pressing Wichita Independent, taking 16 shots on goals.

Liberal’s defense did not allow a single shot from Wichita Independent. Independent’s lone goal was self-inflicted by Liberal.

Crystal Tiscareno tied the game in the first half with an unassisted goal, and at halftime the score remained 1-1.

Liberal dominated the second half.

Guadalupe Ramirez chipped in an unassisted goal to give Liberal a 2-1 lead and added an insurance goal later to preserve the 3-1 win.

Independent goalie Claire Wise was pressured by the Lady Redskins all day, blocking eight of Liberal’s 16 shots on goal.

The level of competition will be higher today when Liberal faces Rose Hill.
