Opal L. Pittman, 92, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.

She was born Feb. 23, 1917, to Free W. and Edith (Simpson) Moore near Byers in Pratt County.

She married Sam P. Pittman Dec. 24, 1939, in Liberal. He died April 24, 2001.

She graduated from Byers High School in 1934 as salutatorian. She then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and Fort Hays Normal College in Hays.

She earned her teaching certificate and taught many years in one room schools in Seward and Stevens counties and Moscow Grade School. She was also a farm wife and a musician.  

She was a member of the Lone Star Friends Church. 

She was a former member of the Book Club in Liberal, the Friendly Neighbors and a former 4-H leader, both of Moscow. She was also a member of the Prairieola Sewing Club and Prairieola Social Club.

She was an organist, pianist and soloist for church, weddings and funerals.   

Survivors include one son, Roger Pittman, Monterey, Calif.; one daughter, Martha Thompson and husband, Joe, Moscow; four grandchildren, Joe D. Thompson and wife, Valerie, Jay Thompson and wife, Michelle, Sara Pittman and Lea Pittman; and five great-grandchildren, Jace, Jaron and Vance Thompson, Malia Meyer and Sam Pittman

She was preceded in death by one brother, Col.(ret) Orven Moore, and one sister, Evelyn Moore Hostetler.

o Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lone Star Friends Church in Woods with the Rev. Larry Bradford presiding. 

Burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Lone Star Friends Church for the Opal Pittman Memorial Fund in Care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.
