• Daily Leader staff report

Authorities are still searching for the suspect in an armed robbery Friday morning of the Mr. Payroll office at National Beef, according to Liberal Police Department Cpt. Pat McClurg.

“The evidence indicates that the suspect is either a current or former employee of the plant, and he spoke English with little to no accent,” McClurg said. “The investigators are continuing to follow up on numerous tips that have come in from the public over the weekend.”

On Friday, at about 9:56 a.m., officers from the LPD were summoned to National Beef for a report of an armed robbery.

The suspect was described by witnesses as a Hispanic male dressed in black, standing about 5-feet, 7-inches tall, with an average build.

Witnesses believed he was armed with a weapon. The suspect demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the area.

No injuries were reported.

Though no further description of the suspect was reported, authorities believe a vehicle may possibly have been involved in the getaway.

“Police are looking for a vehicle leaving the area at about the time of the robbery,” the police noted in a press release Friday afternoon. “The vehicle is described as a blue, Jeep Liberty with no spare tire cover and tinted back windows. The tag is unknown.”

“Again, the police department would like to encourage the public to visit our web site at www.cityofliberal.com/police to view images of the suspect and vehicle,” McClurg said earlier today. “Tips can be called in to 626-0151 or to the Crime Hotline at 624-4000.
