SATANTA – Carolyn Jane Schwertfeger, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, in Peoria, Ariz.

She was born July 10, 1925, to Jesse Baker and Bunice Maggie (Fincher) Winsted in Liberal.

She married Marvin R. Schwertfeger July 26, 1949, in Garden City. He died in December of 2008.

She attended and graduated from Satanta High School in 1943. She graduated from Emporia State Teachers College, where she was a member of the Phi Kappa sorority.

She taught elementary school in Junction City and Satanta. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Satanta. She taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years, and she participated in many activities, including Bible study classes at her church. She was later an associate member of Lakeview United Methodist Church in Sun City, Ariz.

She enjoyed flowers and gardening, reading, friends and traveling to spend time with her family.

Survivors include one son, Alan R. Schwertfeger (Dr. Landon Hoecker), Phoenix; two daughters, Elaine (Gregg) Nielson, Holton, and Dr. Deedee (Terry) McGuin, Merritt Island, Fla.; one brother, Ray H. Winsted, Carmel, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Tara, Tyler, Trent and Trace McGuin and Colton Nielson.

o Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Satanta.

Burial will be at the Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church and may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
