After having a big lead against Dodge City in both sets against the Lady Red Demons, the Lady Redskins couldn’t put the game away.

Dodge City rallied in both sets to earn a win over the Lady Redskins which ended the Lady Redskins Western Athletic Conference championship streak at three.

Liberalw as up 19-12 in the first set and 18-11 in the second before the Lady Red Demons rallied.

The Lady Rdskins were up 24-19 when Dodge City hit a ball down the line that was called out by the line judge, but after a conference with the official the callw as reversed, and Dodge City went on to rally to the 26-24 match win.

“That was the downfall,” Liberal coach Hugo Cano said of the loss to Dodge City. “All we needed was one more point. We lost momentum, and they outplayed us and outsmarted us seven points to zero. We failed to put them away. We started off well but couldn’t finish strong, and they did. That took the air out of our balloon, and we struggled the rest of the day.”

Liberal opened the tournament with a 25-22, 14-25, 25-13 win over Great Bend before dropping the match to Dodge City.

The Lady Redskins then faces Hays and knoced off the Lady Indians 22-25, 25-18, 33-31.

Liberal dropped the final contest of the day to Garden City, 25-20, 21-25, 19-25.

Liberal ended the competitve tournament in a three-way tie for second with Garden City and Great Bend.

“ It is hard to win the WAC that many years in a row,” Cano said. “We beat Dodge City last year, and it went down to the wire. This year unable to do it.”

Freshman Riley Hay had 14 digs.

“She is doing what her role is,” Cano said.

Destiny Hall had a strong day for the Lady Redskins at the net with

14 blocks and 31 kills, but Cano said he wanted to see a more consistent effort from the team as a whole.

“We need a strong core and we didn’t have that,” he said. “Someone would be on for two or three, then off. We had too many offs.”

Still, the Lady Redskins gained valuable playing expereince for three freshmen which should help in the upcoming Sub-State tournament at Bishop Carroll Saturday.

Liberal is the fourth seed and will play either Ark City or Andover.

The winner will likely face 36-0 Andover Central who faces Wichita West in the first round.
