After a strong first half performance, the Southwestern heights Mustangs couldn’t get the offense into the end zone in the second half and fell to the Holcomb Longhorns 34-13.
The Mustangs jumped on the scoreboard early when Alex Adame intercepted a pass and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. Wes Winfrey made the kick for a 7-0 Mustang lead.
Holcomb responded with a touchdown late in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.
The Mustangs regained the lead with an 11-yard touchdown run by Winfrey early in the second quarter, but the conversion failed and Heights had a 13-7 lead.
But the Longhorns once again responded when DelaRosa broke loose on a 35-yard touchdown run. The kick was good, and Holcomb had a 14-13 lead.
Neither team scored until the final minute of the third quarter when Holcomb picked up a Mustang fumble and ran it back 40 yards for a touchdown and a 21-13 lead.
Holcomb added two more scores in the fourth quarter for the 34-13 win.
Tyrel Justice carried the ball for the Mustangs 11 times for 46 yards for an average of 4.2 yards per carry.
Winfrey scrambled four times for 21 yards.
Winfrey threw 33 passes, completing 16 of them for 116 yards while throwing three interceptions.
Adame also attempted a pass and completed it for a 13-yard gain.
Ruben Chavez had four rushes for 14 yards.
The Mustangs will return home Friday to host Cimarron in a district match-up.
