Obituary

PLAINS – George Grant Fruit, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at the Lone Tree Retirement Center, Meade.

He was born Feb. 19, 1935, to George M. and Helen Marie (Richard) Fruit in Haviland.

He married Victoria Lester Mena in October 1958.

He married Joan Brown Chancey June 29, 1973, in Plains. She survives.

He graduated from Haviland High School in 1954.

After his graduation, he began his career as a clerk for several railroads, retiring after 25 years of service.  He then began working for USD No. 483 as the maintenance director retiring after 10 years.

He was a member of Plains United Methodist Church and served as a councilman for the City of Plains for 16 years.

He enjoyed gardening, photography, motorcycles, traveling with his wife and animals.

Other survivors include his children, Veronica Lynn Fruit Stephenson and husband, Tim, Newton, Lisa Renee Fruit Bortz, Wichita, George G. Fruit Jr., Wichita, Debra Jo Steadman and husband, Terry, Pampa, Texas, Robert Loyd Chancey and wife, Sarah, Satanta, and Tim Lynn Chancey, Ferguson, Mo.; four sisters, Martha Gamble, Pahrump, Nev., Georgia Beatty, Apple Springs, Texas, Francis Beat, Kingman, and Elizabeth Adams, Hemet, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sheila Lorraine Fruit Aumiller; and a sister, Glenna McDaniel.

o Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Plains United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Schadel presiding.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Laverne Cemetery.

Friends may call until 7 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade.
