Melvin Louis French, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at Southwest Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 30, 1920, to Jesse J. and Dora Nevins French in in Stevens County.

He married Muriel O. Rawlins on Dec. 23, 1940 in Hollis, Okla. She died March 30, 2001.

He grew up and attended school in this area and attended Liberal High School.

He farmed and in the winter delivered milk for Meadow Gold Dairies until 1969. He then worked as a janitor at Liberal High School and in 1969 began work with Scantlin’s Furniture. In 1976, they returned to full-time farming until 1999 when they moved back to Liberal and he retired from farming in 2000.

He was a member of Western Avenue Church of Christ in Liberal.

He was a member of Farm Bureau.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald French and wife, Karla, Tipton, Okla., and Stanley French and wife, Judi, Tipton; three daughters, Melva Jean Fishell and husband, Robert, Liberal, Loree Pigeon and husband, Leon, Chouteau, Okla., and Dora Favela, Liberal;  two brothers, Donald French and wife, Eva, Grove, Okla., and Wilber French and  wife, Marilyn, Plains; one daughter-in-law, Delia French, Norfolk, Va.; 41 grandchildren; and 55 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and one son, Dennis French.

o Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Western Ave. Church of Christ in Liberal with Ron Davis and John Morgan presiding. 

Burial followed at the Tyrone Cemetery.
