Around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Seward County firefighters responded to a structure fire about one mile north of Liberal on U.S. Highway 83. Fire chief Mike Rice said the house in which the fire occurred sustained quite a bit of damage, particularly to the east and south side, with the southeast bedroom suffering some heat and smoke damage as well as water damage. Rice said the cause of the fire was ruled accidental, and he was unsure of the dollar loss of the property. No injuries were sustained in the fire, as no one was home at the time of the call. The fire, according to Rice, was ruled under control at 11:18 a.m., with the last unit leaving the scene at 12:38 p.m. Workers were back on scene for cleanup a little after 2 p.m. though.
