Liberal’s linemen simply couldn’t be contained Friday night at Redskin Field in a 49-3 dominating win over the Guymon, Okla., Tigers.

The offensive line opened up holes for the Redskin running game that kept the Angry Red on sustained drives for touchdowns, and the Redskins defensive front made it difficult for Guymon to cross the scrimmage line.

The blocking allowed Alan Marquez and Syris Dunlap to have 100-yard nights. Marquez had 17 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, and Dunlap had 15 carries for 118 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for another.

While the Redskins were gashing the Tiger defense for 335 yards on the ground, the Guymon offense couldn’t find holes against the Angry Red defense.

Guymon’s only scoring opportunity came late in the first half when Dunlap may have made his only mistake of the night, launching a deep pass into a stiff wind that was intercepted, and Guymon returned the ball to the Redskins 35 yard line.

But the Redskins defense forced a fourth down at the 25 yard line, and the Tigers opted for a 42-yard field goal attempt with the wind at their backs, and the ball sailed through the uprights.

By then, Liberal already scored three touchdowns, two by Dunlap and another on a diving touchdown catch by Josh Arafol who squirted by a Tiger defender down the sideline and had to sprint to catch up to the Dunlap pass and dive to catch the ball in the end zone.

Liberal started the second half with a 52-yard drive that ended with another one-yard dive by Dunlap for a touchdown, and after a Tiger punt the Redskins marched 58 yards capped by the first touchdown of the season for Marquez on a seven-yard run tot he end zone and a 35-3 lead.

Liberal coach Jason Dunlap made substitutions the rest of the way, and Braxton Hyde guided the offense on a 10-play, 87-yard drive that ended with a 31-yard touchdown run by Cesar Burciaga and a 42-3 Redskin lead.

Kris Workman recovered a Guymon fumble on the next drive, and Liberal’s reserves only needed three plays to move the ball 25 yards and into the end zone that included a 10-yard touchdown run by Isiah Witherspoon, and the Redskins coasted to the 49-3 win.

“You always want a quick start,” Dunlap said. “The boys came out with a lot of enthusiasm. If it starts good it usually ends good.”

Liberal still had two personal foul penalties, something that did not sit well with Dunlap.

“We have to limit stupid penalties,” he said. “Maybe it will take some more running, but they are going to stop.”

But that didn’t damper a special night for Dunlap and the Redskins in their first home game as a team and coaching staff.

“It’s always special, the first home one,” he said. “You try to block it out. I shed a few tears. Feel like shedding some now. It was a special moment doing it with this group of players and coaches. They mean a lot to me. Some of these coaches played for me also.”

Liberal (2-0) will now move into the Western Athletic Conference slate when they host Hays Friday. The Indians defeated Great Bend 21-20 and will be looking to avenge last year’s loss to the Redskins.

“I am very proud of my boys, they are working hard and still learning,” Dunlap said. “It is night and day from what they came from. They are learning and getting better. It isn’t easy to score in the WAC. We have to strap our hats on and get ready.”
