What started as a defensive battle turned into a scoring frenzy for the Butler Grizzlies against the Saints Wednesday night in the Greenhouse.

After a grinding half that had Butler leading 28-24, the Saints gave up 53 second half points in an 81-67 loss.

Butler used the long ball to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead with back-to-back threes before the Saints went on a 9-2 run to take a 9-8 lead.

It would be the only lead of the night.

Butler responded with another three to take an 11-9 lead, and with 8:36 to play in the half Equan Ards connected on the fourth Grizzly three to give Butler a 16-12 lead.

Seward had a chance to regain the lead with 2:10 to play in the half, but Ke’Sean Davis missed a pair of free throws, and the Grizzlies extended the lead from 23-22 to 28-24 at half.

Seward struggled against the Butler defense, and frustration resulted in a technical foul against Mohamed Selmi when he slammed the ball to the court after a Seward County turnover.

Butler built leads as high as 19, but the Saints never trailed by 20. But for every Seward basket, the Grizzles had an answer, and the Saints felt o 0-2 in the Jayhawk Conference with an 81-67 loss.

The Saints committed 28 turnovers, and despite outshooting Butler 48 percent to 40 percent, the Grizzlies made 27 free throw out of 35 attempts while Seward only made 12 of 22 free throw attempts.

Davis was the only Saint to reach double digits with 13 points.

The Saints will travel to Cloud County to face the Thunderbirds who knocked off No. 1 Hutchinson 82-79 in overtime to move to 2-0. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday in Concordia.
