The top-seeded Lady Redskins forced Goodland into 34 turnovers in the opening round of the Salina Invitational Tournament Thursday, and they turned most of those into points, crushing the struggling Cowgirls 56-16 to advance to the semi-finals.

Katie Horyna led the charge for the Lady Redskins, scoring 14 points in a game where nine of the 11 Lady Redskins scored.

Liberal’s defense set the tone early, and after only allowing a pair of free throws in the first quarter, the Lady Redskins jumped out to a 20-2 lead.

But the offense slowed down in the second quarter, and while the defense continued to corral the Cowgirls, Liberal’s offense sputtered.

The Lady Redskins still had a 26-4 lead, but Goodland was able to score and get fouled in the final seconds of the half to push Liberal’s lead under 20 at half, 26-7.

But it only took seconds into the third quarter to go back up by 20 on a quick basket, and the Lady Redskins continued to pressure the struggling Cowgirls.

By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Redskins had built a 46-13 lead.

Liberal coach Carter Kruger was able to get all his players in, including freshman Sanaa Dunlap who was coming off a knee injury from her eighth grade season.

Liberal coasted in the final period to the 56-16 victory.

“We jumped on them and used defensive pressure,” Kruger said. “That led to a lot of our baskets. Last four minutes of fourth quarter, we shot the ball well from three, got good looks. We didn’t play well on offense in the second quarter. Other than that, it was a great team performance. A lot of kids got to play.”

Horyna’s 14 led the Lady Redskins followed by Machia Mullens who scored 10, eight of those in the second half. Ali Lucero had eight, and Whitney Hay scored six in a balanced scoring effort for the Lady Redskins.

“Our press just really suffocated them,” Kruger said. “We got them thinking too much. We flew around the court and got deflections, got hands on a lot of passes, and took them out of their offense.”

While Hay and Audrey Gilmore may not have scored a lot of points, Kruger thought they contributed in other key areas.

“Whitney Hay came in and played a great game,” Kruger said. “Audrey (Gilmore) had a good first half. Defensively, she really stepped up.”

The Lady Redskins (9-1) will play Salina South who knocked off Andover, 56-42.

Kruger didn’t know which his team would play after Liberal’s game, but he know both would be a challenge.

“Either one of them will probably be the second-best team on our schedule of who we’ve played so far,” he said. “Hays is very comparable. Our kids have to recognize it will be a big challenge, a totally different game. Today’s ponts won’t help us tomorrow.”

And he may rely on the intense defensive pressure that his team showed against Goodland, something they didn’t use much against Classen Saturday.

“We settled in defensively and took another step,” Kruger said. “We pressed. Some games we haven’t used our press a lot. In this game we improved.”

Liberal tips off against Salina South at 3 p.m. today with the game being played at Kansas Weslyan University.
